How to make your broadband modem secure?

In my previous article  I explained how insecure the broad band connection is .So here I will tell you how to make it secure.

Well this is not a problem from the broad band providers side but some mis – configurations is the reason for the insecurity and the broad band people are not techie enough to identify the threat and guide their customers to make it secure.

Many people install firewall and think that they are secure from threats like this. But this is a misconception..Firewalls protects your  Computer only not your Router or Modem .The password is being stolen from your modem and not from your computer.

If you understand networking, you might have realized that it was not hacking to another persons machine but merely logging into the remote administration service of the modem.

This is just a simple search to identify  victims who are absolutely ignorant of their weak security on web.

Most routers have an option to disable remote management. This makes you able to login to your modems control panel from your internal network only.Try to identify this and disable it.I cant explain how to because it varies with modems.

Note : On SmartAX MT880 eventhough Remote Management is disabled , it permits remote logins from over the Internet. So change your mode administration passwords immediately.

Now I wil tell you few more measures that you can implement. You can configure your modem in two ways.

RFC Bridged mode   - You need to dial the connection every time

pppoe mode   - You are always connected to the net when ever your computer is on

Prefer RFC Mode  because,in RFC mode you are keeping the user id and password in your computer itself and you are dialing the modem with the user id and password every time.

In PPOE mode, you already saved your credentials in the modem which is insecure.

A final tip that I can provide you is change the modems default login credentials if you have an option to do so in the modems control panel. Never keep default passwords like “admin”

SO,Let me wind up the tips I have mentioned to make your modem secure

1. Use RFC Bridged mode if it is sufficient for you.

2. Change the default admin password of your modem.

4. Disable remote configuration feature.

5. And above all check your broadband account usage at regular intervals. If you are using bsnl broadband, you can check the usage using this tool  http://duf.sourceforge.net/

Understand the seriousness of this issue and do make your broadband connection secure at the earliest and please don’t forget to pass it on to your friends who are using broadband
