Only Software Engineers can build India’s Google-Rediff CEO

Ajit-Balakrishnan-2.jpg

Ajit Balakrishnan, Chairman and CEO of Rediff.com  has made an appealing statement to computer graduates of india. He said “The young software geeks from india should set themselves as an Internet Business Entrepreneur just like Larry Pages and Serbey Grills(The CEO’s of google) did 12 years back.Ajit Balakrishnan has the opinion that the next biggest internet company would be developed by a young 22 year old software geek who would do something radical and revolutionize the internet era.He says  “This is because a 22 year old guy dont see constraints like we we older folks see. They always want to get more freedom to communicate. The social networking sites has taken the level of communication between the youth to the next level. They has given the freedom to communicate with any person in the world with out barriers.Obviously, all these socialnetworking sites are being developed by youngsters.

He adds  ” The internet industry needs 22 year old Computer Science graduates who can create products that have inherent network effects. Products like twitter and facebook are there because of the network effects.”
He mentioned “We need to resolve three paradoxes before we can create ten Indian internet companies as a one billion Dollar company,” The three paradoxes are while globally successful internet companies are owned by Computer science graduates,in our country, india, most of the internet companies are set up by  management graduates.Internet industry income in india is less than 10 percent compared to countries which have same internet user base.

While entrepreneur complain that less engineers are available for them, engineers say that no entrepreneurs are available to them.
He also added that “The industry needs to support and encourage such young entrepreneurs by providing them funding and hand holding to build such products.”

What do you think about the above scenario?why the internet revenue in india is not up to the mark, although we have educated man power in excess.?Who can make a succesful internet company in india ?   A software engineer or a management graduate ??   Raise your voice as comments….

  1. Well if i guess what is required today is a computer science grad with some knowledge of managment for such a billion dollar company to arise.. Moreover, internet is one space where innovation is possible ensuring better profits, if the idea is different from the scores of the other web based portals.. balakrishnan is right. management grads can’t understand the technical differences to brought in their web venture.. its only a computer scinece grad, who ultimately venture into bpos or MNCs losing out on their core competency.. its their tech innovative mind

  2. While I do agree on the point that young people drive the internet and so one of them will create the next big thing, I necessarily don’t agree see Facebook and Twitter as the benchmarks. These are companies that are still grappling with the question of how to make money off a business – a question that probably was never asked in the thousands of years business existed – simply because business came with a monetization model.

It is not about the numbers as bragged about by the Facebooks and Twitters but the value the users bring to the company. LinkedIn is a great example. And so are Indian companies like Zoho which have great potential looking into the future.
